North American Power's reply to: Variable rate rip off

We're truly sorry to hear that this customer did not enjoy their experience with us. We do our very best to offer our current customers the most competitive rates we can because variable rate customers can leave our service at any time, without penalty. The cost of purchasing our energy varies, however, and there are times when our variable rates need to rise to reflect increases. We would like to emphasize that we clearly state that our advertised price for our variable rate is an introductory rate on our marketing materials, website, and Terms of Service. Fortunately, we now offer 6 and 12 month fixed rate plans (in addition to rates that are guaranteed to be below the utility price, in select states) that guarantee our rate will remain the same for 6 or 12 billing cycles. These fixed rate plans are a great option for customers that prefer price stability. For additional information on our rates and plans, we encourage customers to visit napower.com or call 888-313-9086.

Variable rate rip off

Signed up for the 7.99 cent offer. Their rate raised up to 13.49cents within 2 months. The hottest month of the year they over charged me hundreds. Cancelled their service right away and asked for some middle ground mediation, they said because of the fixed rate contract their hands were tied...could not even meet JCP&l's own rate of 10 cents/kw.

Stay away...it is highway robbery and I spent over an hour on the phone with the company asking to speak to supervisors, being told there were none....

The fact that they can charge anything they want without regulation is ridiculous. Even if I wanted to change terms I would have a months lapse where they can charge me whatever they want. Contact JCP&L after I had a conversation with them about them not being able to provide me with any credit and JCP&L said that there was no reason they could not provide us with a credit, that if they sent them a request it would go in, even if it was retroactive.

It's hilarious to see complaints like this. Do you research anything before you buy it?

Do you just randomly buy stocks because you heard you can make money off the stock market??? Perhaps you should have researched deregulation, alternate suppliers, and how the energy market works, before blaming a company for YOUR ignorance.

North American Power - A Rip Off

I signed up with North American Power after receiving their post cards in the mail offering 7.99 cents per kwh. Got that rate for first month only then they jacked my rate the second month to 12.49 cents per kwh, a 56% increase.

When I got my bill I called to cancel the service but had to stay with them for another month until I could going back to ACE since I was already into the new biling period. North American Power charged me 13.49 cents per kwh the third month. The ACE price to compare was a steady 9.05 cents per kwh. I would have paid $69.05 less in supply charges for these two months had I used ACE.

Also, they never sent the promised gift card for signing up.

I should have researched the company better before proceeding. What a scam!

Anyone that chooses a variable rate, that means up and down. North American Power has fixed rates that are very good. Education is the key.

I was promised by North American Power to have the best on the market rates for electricity supply, better than RG@E, they actually claimed that the latter didn't shop for the best rates. I signed up for their deal on the phone, for the fist month i got reasonable good bill, but the next month it was increase in 33%.

When i called the company suddenly it turned out that it was the good deal was only for one month. That was a news to me, nobody mentioned that and I don't remember reading that information before.

Now I have to wait for another two cycles of their rip of in order to get back to RG@G. Very shady company in my opinion.

False advertising

signed on because of quoted rate of 7.99 cents/kwh

although it was stated that it was a variable rate, the 2nd month rate was 12.99 - an increase of 62%.

Called to complain that the 7.99 should not have been advertised if it was an abnormally low rate. They offered to switch me to fixed rate, saying the 12.99 was due to unusual circumstances - I said no; that I rather not do business with them. I told them to terminate the service, which they agreed would be done after the next billing.

Glad I terminated as the next bill's rate was 13.99 - a 75% increase over the initial publicized rate.

all in all, the 3 months total averaged a 25% increase over the "comparable rate"

North American Power's reply to: Variable VS Fixed

For those that prefer price stability, fixed rates are certainly the way to go. Although variable rates can rise (but also fall), some customers do prefer the freedom of leaving a variable rate plan at any time, without penalty. Current customers that are on a variable rate plan can inquire about their rate and plan options--including fixed rates. They can do so by calling 888-313-9086 or visiting napower.com.

Variable VS Fixed

Not all bad! If you sign up for the variable w/o find out all the information first - you're going to get screwed over.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ask questions! If they have the information they will provide it to you. If they don't have the information, they WILL find it out for you and/or give you a call back. The fixed rates are definitely a better option - you DO save money!

Ask more about those, they go into effect at the next meter read date.

You'll be a lot happier and actually save money! Just a helpful tip for those they need it.

It's safe until the period expires. Then what?

My guess is the rate goes to 13.9 until you realize and cancel.

I agree 100 percent go with the fixed rate and it is very safe

Dont do it

I received a mailer and called in to save some money on my electric bill. I was called back and thought i asked all the right questions.

What you need to ask is how long the rate will be in valid for. I can tell you one month. It then jumps to a higher rate which is currently 0.1099, my Connecticut Light and Power is .076 now. It takes up to 2 months to get switched back out to another provider.

I guess you can say i didn't read the fine print. but the fine print should say it wont save you any money and can take up to 2 months to reverse any decision

Read the fine print first

I received a flyer from North American power today June 5 2013 yes it does state lower rates but after reading the fine print it says these lower rates are only in effect until 3/31/13 I experience very high rates with PSEG but I understand from others who have switched that my bills are actually lower then theirs I have been told in some cases there's an additional rate also something called a line usage rate I don't know what that is I'm not changing from my current provider but you should read the fine print and ask current customers before switching ! I was formally with rock land electric my bills were much lower than PSEG and less estimated bills of course I'm also currently in an apartment an the meters are not read because they're inside the building and all doors are locked does anyone know if this is legal?

Bait and Switch

Like many, I tried to save a few bucks by switching to North American after a large flyer promised significant discounts. I was at 11 cents/KWH. Big shiny ad with 7.99 C/Kwh.Called and switched. First bill was fine. A friend of mine told me that he knew someone who had the same company and was taken advantage of by the switch. It happened to me the next month, so I know for a FACT that they are using teaser rates and then slamming the consumer the following bill. These guys have no shame.

When I called they told me that I agreed that it would be fixed for one month. They are right, but very misleading.

In the rush to save a few pennies, I wound up spending more. Buyer beware! Read the small print.

Bad company. Poor customer service. Arrogant jerks.

Same thing happened to me. First bill was okay. It was later explained to me that the first bill was a PROMOTIONAL rate!!!

Second bill was higher than any bill I had received from my regular provider. When I called they said it would take 2 -3 MONTHS to switch back!!!

I reported them to the Better Business Bureau. I demanded $ back.

Buyer Beware!

Lesson learned regarding reading the fine print! We switched to North American Power due to their mail advertisement offering a monthly rate of .0799 per kwh.

First month, the bill was significantly lower and we were very pleased we made the switch. Then, I just got the second bill only to find that my rate had jumped to .1199---that's higher than the current JCP&L rate of .1057. I pulled out the information North American sent me upon enrolling and found, to my dismay, that it does state that the introductory rate applies to the first month, and a 'variable rate' applies thereafter.

Shame on me for not reading the fine print and for jumping at the chance to save a few bucks. I'm going to cancel with North American and seek another generation company.

I have been with NAP for quite some time now. All I can say is that my rates have been lower than my utility company.

If NAP raised their rates then I am pretty sure its because the utility company raised their rate as well. So I was still paying less than the utility company.

NAP offers competitive fixed rates also. 8)

Melaine Hei

Many of the issues raised here could be prevented if people chose the fixed rate instead of the variable rate, which will fluctuate especially in colder months.

They also offer an 8-month plan where you can lock in that fixed rate for a full 8 months at a discounted price.

No, I am not a member of NAP, but I am considering joining so I've done some due diligence and found I could lower my total electric bill by 20% for one month, or take the 8-month plan and pay less than many people pay for just 1 or 2 months, so obviously I think that's a great deal.

Then if the company wanted to raise the rate after 8 months you could always switch back to your old utility at no charge, but the company knows that and I'm sure they offer competitive rates to keep their customers from leaving.

And for someone with more than 30 years in home-based businesses I think the income opportunity is simply outstanding and the best I've seen in my 30 years, since it's free to join and includes a free website and free promotional activities.

By referring just 10 people to a free program--and encouraging them to do the same--you would earn more than $100,000 per year once your sixth level was filled, possibly even $100,000 per MONTH.

To me it's as easy as passing out $100 bills, but you do have to use some common sense and lock in the lowest possible rate.

It should also be noted that this company gives $1 a month from every bill to charity, and also has a great fundraising program that can help thousands of churches, schools and other non-profits, without anybody spending any extra money.

North American Power / Cannot even lie very well

We switched over 2 accounts to N. American Power in September, with guarantee of 1st month, moving forward all seemed well.

Then April statement came in with billing adjustment of $815. on 1 account and another $340 on second account. When questioning these ID 10 T's about the billing adjustment, they said they had demand surge and had to raise

price's, asked when the demand surge started, it was within my guarantee date, asked they adjust, no! Since my billing still comes from my original supplier, I calculated my bill from the change, the total difference would have been a savings of $1,670.

Funny thing to all this, my In-Laws live next door, throughout this whole mess, they kept getting the same offer that switched us!

Awesome Company and Awesome Products

Unfortunately, I think most of the complainers on here either were mislead by an individual or simply did not understand what they were purchasing. North American Power is a fantastic company and offers truly great products.

If a person purchased a variable rate...which was all the company offered until December 2012...then of course the bill will fluctuate. But...variable rates tend to save people money over time. But hey...Variable means Variable and one should know that going in. As to energy credits...the company doesn't sell a "credit" product that reduces your electricity.

Never have. What the company does provide is a very respected line of products, some with discounts, and provides customers with many benefits they can't get elsewhere.

Don't allow a bunch of folks who either didn't understand what they were buying or were mislead by an individual who was not a "company employee" lead you to believe this company or its products, or its numerous honorable independent representatives are in any way scamming anyone. Complain if you want...but please tell the FACTS!

If you read the fine print, it clearly states the teaser rate is only good for a month. Yes, the ads are misleading and I'm sure many people here think that 7.99 cents was a permanent rate.

I'm a PSE&G customer in NJ and while NAP's rates have been variable, they have not been as outrageous as others have claimed. Some months were more than PSE&G's rate and some less. Although I switched to another supplier, I have no regrets with NAP.

If you include the rebates I got, I still made money on the 6 months I spent with them than if I hadn't signed up at all. Sounds like your mileage may vary and your location is a huge factor.

I wish people would do their due diligence before they make their own subjective remarks. NAPower is a great company, and continue to grow, and the leadership is tremendous.

The opportunity with this company is second to none.

That is why everyone either has to make a remark, or compare themselves to NAP, I would even think that some of the negative remarks might come from rival competitors. This is a company of integrity.

Guest

NAP is a predatory company - - Plain and simple. These reviews cannot be from customers, so if you had any questions for NAP's marketing team, this might just be the place to ask.

Guest

I agree! I've been with North American Power for almost a year now just as a customer and my bill has been lower ever since I signed up. Yes, it's a variable rate and it does go up and down but, my bill has been lower then Atlantic City Electric every month since I made the switch.

Guest

Who ever wrote these comments is full of *** and probably part of NAP's advertising team. Yes it's a variable rate after the first month and yes, I did read that.

The scam is that you expect it to be variable in the range of the new lower rate.

You don't expect it to jump up by nearly 80% the next month and then never go that low again. That's exactly what they are doing.

Guest
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-654543

Bull - couldn't agree more. They knowingly scam, and basically say they have tapped into a lower-cost market when that market doesn't even exist!

How is it that they think people will continue to be customers when as an add-on to an existing service, their only purpose would be to save the consumer money - and they can't even consistently do that! Web of lies.

Guest

I agree completely!! I love being apart of the NAP team and it truly is like a family who look out for one another and help each and every new or old partner! :)

Guest

NAP has provided us with lower rates all along. Yes variable rates may fluctuate to ne higher one month but overall no other company offers the benefits of NAP.

NOT THE RATE THEY SAY IS NOT WHAT YOU KEEP

With my JCP&L bills, I am already a customer of N A, yet my rates have been .1199 with these liars from Connecticut, NOT 7.99. In

today's supermarket circulars is the super card size ad AGAIN showing the rates for PSE&G 10.97 Atlantic City 11,71,

JCP&L 10.57, and Rockland 11.97 , but oh no!

No.Am. @ 7.99. Gateway came and signed me back on from what I used to have. Am I mad?

We complainers need a lawyer that can file a class action law suit so that they get hit hard. Back on what was actually charged and what it should have been as of 7.99. What they were charging me for the last 3 months is @.1199.

I am ready to join in with any of you mad about this. And I got others in our retirement village into this, because these units are all- electric run.

Brief: Bill went from an average of $244 to $903. Sad story.

Just continue working and paying the bills you have now. PPL representative laughed when I asked her "Do you think choosing this suppler helped me?" I normally find it disrespectful to laugh when I'm serious but I find that being honest. All I needed was to hear that and I call North American and cancelled immediately. The North American Power representatives laughed also when I told them.

She didn't even hesitate to cancel.

Honestly she offered to cancel it. So just keep your money and continue paying bills.

Don't Switch to North American Power-Scam

Hope you read this before switching. I switched to North American Power based upon an advertisement they mailed to me and received $0.0799 per kilo watt hour for electric generation charges on first billing cycle which was the rate I agreed to went signing up with North American Power.

On my next bill the rate jumped to $0.1149.

The J C P and L comparable rate was $0.1068 per kilo watt hour. I immediately switched away from North American Power upon receiving my bill, but due to scheduling the switch could take 1 or 2 billing cycles.

I work for X company and my upline told me to post a rant hear. Now I'm sure some of these complaints are real as some people are always mis-informed.

I'm certain a bunch of these are probably from others in my group who were told to do the same. While no company is perfect, I won't bs people or put another company down. I have integrity.

I like my deal and don't know of any real problems with my deal or the NAP deal. If energy companies didn't save people money (overall) they wouldn't be in business very long.

North American Power is certainly a company that scams its customers for as long as they can in the hopes they can quietly charge exorbitant fees to profit off the impression that rates will remain lower then their competitors long term. NAP has no intention in competing for the best rate, given the number of complaints that follow this behavior. You would be wise to not attempt business with a company that has no intention in improving your pocketbook and has every intention to scam as much extra money out of your bank account until you wise up as many others are doing you the good service to teach you from their own experience with the company.

I am a North American Power customer since December 10th 2012.

Our rate is 7.29Centsper KWH.

And My utility(PSNH)is at 9.54 Cents. The rate has not changed for 3 months.

I will continur to use their service and report back. SO far so good.

I've been an NAP customer for over a year. Overall, I've saved hundreds. There have been 2 times in the 14 months I've been a customer that the utility has beat NAP's rate. But I don't care bc NAP pays my bills!

I can understand you want to "switch back" if the rate jumps to something you didn't agree to. However, its clear on the website when you enroll that you're signing up for a variable rate-As in subject to change with the volatile market-idk if you know this but the market is pretty volatile these days.

People let's be serious. You signed up with a company. YOU are responsible to read the print. If you don't like something its ok to change. You didn't get NAP in a day. Is it really that unreasonable that you get out of NAP in a day??

I don't understand why people smear the company? And $100 in losses really? How HUGE is your home that on 3.50 CENTS per killowatt you lost $50 a month? Furthermore are you really SO upset about that $7 difference that you had to drag the company through the mud? It's a scam? Really?? How about you call the editors at FORBES magazine, tell them they printed a full spread about a SCAM - they named NAP as the 57th most promising company in America! Maybe send a letter to the American Business Awards and tell them our (not one) but TWO gold Steevies should be given to Conico-Phillips instead. *They came in second place to our #1 Best Energy Company.

Honestly, put your big -girl- panties on and grow up. Stop spouting lies about a reputable, philanthropic company, founded and run by generous kind hearted people, just because you were too ignorant to read the fine print on the clearly stated website.

But since nothing I said will change your mind I'll leave you with this, I appreciate your supporting our 3 year young company.

Your response is the single most compelling reason I will not shift to NAP. What an emotional, ugly, self-serving rant by a NAP advocate whose motivation - clearly - is not to educate, but to bully.

You will do your power company, and perhaps yourself, more good with reasoned discourse.

If your arguments are sound, people will be swayed. If laced with invective - like yours - they are dismissed as irrelevant.

I don't think the last person's intent was to bully. You see, this site Pissed Consumer, provides no mechanism to prompt the disgruntled consumer to present enough information to have their grievance addressed with information.

It's ok to be angry at a company but you should enter into the issue with the idea that there may be something more to what's going on. In full disclosure, I am both a customer and a referring customer. Over the past year I have saved money (and I would posted scanned bills if this site allowed, but it does not). And as for those that I refer I explain to each person which product they should be looking at based on their personal needs.

For example, if you want a consistent rate you should select a Fixed-Rate product (one rate, 6 months, no changes) But, if you like the idea of taking advantage of price drops in the energy market you should select a Variable Rate product - but! if you select a variable rate product you can't expect to take advantage of the price drops but not be impacted by the price increases. However, in either case, you do end up paying just about the same over time (likely a bit less with the variable rate) both saving you over the local utility.

Here's the thing, different people make purchasing decisions based on different criteria. With my friends and contacts that I refer I tell them this; if you save even just a few bucks over the year but with the knowing that you've substantially decreased your carbon footprint AND supported the creation of new local green energy jobs, don't you think that's better than doing nothing?

I have been with the company 3 months and I love everything about North American Power. Such a loving and helpful community that I now consider family!

:) For all the people upset about the variable rate you can now have a fixed rate that you are only tied to for 6 months at a time. And the cancellation fee is the lowest I ever saw! Talk with the person who told you about the business and if a friend or loved one did not tell you about it then you were mislead very badly. Our company prides itself on being a PEOPLE business.

Not a strange mailer, phone call, or email from people you dont know.

Please dont let one or two months interfer with a lifetime of great opportunities! :zzz
